Little advice for renting a car in the USA

Haluamme kirjoittaa hotellin varaamisesta ja auton vuokraamisesta sekä niihin liittyvistä lisämaksuista. Suomessa olemme tottuneet siihen, että kun palvelun- tai tuotteentarjoaja ilmoittaa hinnan, tuote on sen hintainen, kuten ilmoitettu on eikä, siihen tule lisäksi veroja tai muita kuluja, ellei sitten asiakas itse halua jotain lisäpalveluita ostaa. Toisin on USA:ssa, jossa usein esim. hotellin tai vuokra-auton hintaan tulee kaikenlaisia lisämaksuja kuten esim. veroja, pakollisia vakuutuksia tai palvelumaksuja. 

Vuokrasimme auton Hotwire-palvelun kautta ja maksoimme 2 vuorokaudesta $80 sisältäen pakollisen vakuutuksen ja kun menimme hakemaan autoa Hertzin vuokraamolta, virkailija yritti väkisin myydä meille kaiken maailman lisävakuutuksia kuten henkilövakuutuksia, vaikka meillä tietysti on matkavakuutukset kunnossa. Tarvitsimme tietysti gps:n autoon, jotta osaisimme liikkua paikasta toiseen, joten pyysimme autoa, josta kyseinen laite löytyisi. Virkailija lupasi etsiä meille auton, jossa gps-laite olisi valmiina, ettei meidän tarvitsisi maksaa paremmasta autosta ja gps:stä vielä erikseen. Saimme paperit käteen ja virkailija sanoi, että meillä on 25min aikaa hakea auto, ettei tulisi lisämaksuja odottamisesta ja suuntasimme vahdilla kohti parkkihallia, josta vuokra-auton sai itse hakea. 

Roadtrip meni mukavasti vaikka jouduimme käydä täytättämässä renkaita, koska auto valitti renkaiden ilmanpaineen vähäisyydestä. Kun olimme palauttamassa autoa niin aloimme katsomaan kuittia, jonka virkailija oli laittanut muiden papereiden sekaan ja huomasimme, että hän oli veloittanut $30 / päivä autoluokan nostosta, lisäksi hän oli veloittanut $17 gps:stä, joten lisähintaa tuli huikeat $141 vaikka olimme jo maksaneet etukäteen netissä $80. Tuntui suorastaan vääryydeltä ja epäreilulta, että virkailija oli puhunut aivan muuta vuokratessamme autoa kuin mitä kuitti todellisuudessa meille paljasti. Saimme onneksi autoa palauttaessamme hinnasta pois törkeän kalliin gps-maksun, mutta $30 autoluokan nostamisesta koitunut hinta otti päähän suunnattomasti varsinkin kun automme muistutti keskiluokkaisen kotiäidin kauppakassia eikä mitään luksusluokan huippuautoa, joka tuohon lisähintaan olisi pitänyt saada. 

Kävimme vielä lopuksi antamassa palautetta epäselvästä ja epärehellisestä palvelusta, jota saimme Hertzillä, mutta managerilla ei ollu halua eikä kiinnostusta korjata tilannetta mitenkään asiakkaiden eduksi. Jatkossa vuokraamme auton joltain muulta firmalta.

Olemme silti iloisia, että pääsimme näkemään Arizonaa ja vierailemaan Grand Canyonilla omatoimisesti. Roadtrippailua suosittelemme lämpimästi.

We want to write about booking hotels, renting cars and the added costs that we don't have in Finland. We are used to the fact in Finland that if something has a price there are no added taxes or fees to it if the customer himself doesn't want to get something extra. In the USA there are a lot of fees, taxes, mandatory insurances and other costs that will come on top of the price you have already paid for the service.

We rented a car through Hotwire and paid $80 for two days including the mandatory insurance. When we went to get our car from Hertz the clerk still tried to sell us all kinds of insurances even though we already had the mandatory one and our travel insurances. We needed a car that would have gps in it so we could get from place to place. The clerk promised to find us a car that has gps in it so we wouldn't have to pay extra for it. Then the clerk just gave us a bunch of paperwork and said that we have 25 minutes to pick up the car or otherwise we have to pay extra for the wait. So we headed to the parking garage to pick up the car.

The road trip was nice even though we had to stop to gas station to check pressures from our tires because the car notified that the tire pressure was too low. When we were returing the rental car we started to check the bunch of paperwork that the clerk gave us. We were stunned! The clerk had charged us $30 for a day for a better car and $17 for a day for the gps so $141 extra for us even though the clerk didn't mention anything about the extra costs. It seemed really unfair because we had already paid $80 for the car and the insurance. For $30 extra per day you should get a Dodge not a Nissan!

After returning the car we went to give feedback about dishonest and unclear service to the manager but she had no will or interest to fix the situation or make us feel better as a customer. In the future we will rent our cars from another company.

All in all we are glad that we went to Arizona and visited Grand Canyon by ourselves. We truly recommend road tripping for our readers.
